A sauna does not burn fat. What it removes is water, and the difference between those two things is bigger than most people realize.
The confusion is understandable. You sit in the heat, you sweat heavily, you get out lighter. Every part of that sequence feels like fat leaving your body. It is worth understanding what is actually happening, because once you know where fat physically goes when you lose it, the sauna question answers itself.
What sweat is actually made of
Sweat is roughly 99 percent water. The rest is sodium, chloride, potassium, small amounts of magnesium and calcium, urea, and trace compounds.
There is no fat in it. Not a small amount, not a trace. Sweat glands are not connected to fat stores in any way that would allow fat to be excreted through the skin. They pull fluid from the blood plasma and the space between cells, and they push it out to cool you by evaporation.
The oily film some people notice on their skin during a long session is sebum, produced by separate glands in the skin. That is not fat leaving your body either. It is skin oil that was already on the surface.
Where fat actually goes
This is the part almost nobody knows, including a surprising number of doctors and personal trainers.
In 2014, two researchers at the University of New South Wales traced every atom in a fat molecule through the process of being burned. Body fat is stored as triglyceride, made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. When the body oxidizes it for energy, those atoms have to go somewhere, and they leave as carbon dioxide and water.
The proportions turn out to be 84 percent carbon dioxide and 16 percent water. If someone loses 10 kilograms of fat, 8.4 of those kilograms leave through their lungs as exhaled carbon dioxide. The remaining 1.6 kilograms becomes water, which exits through urine, breath, sweat, and other fluids.
The finding the researchers highlighted is that the lungs are the primary excretory organ for fat loss. You breathe fat out. It does not melt, it does not sweat out, and it does not convert into heat.
The oxygen accounting is the part that surprises people most. Oxidizing 10 kilograms of fat requires inhaling around 29 kilograms of oxygen, which produces 28 kilograms of carbon dioxide and 11 kilograms of water. The oxygen you breathe in to burn fat weighs about three times more than the fat itself. Nothing about sitting in a hot room changes that arithmetic.
Before anyone gets ideas, breathing harder does not accelerate this. The carbon has to be unlocked from the fat molecule first, and that only happens when the body needs energy it does not have on hand. The breathing is the exit route, not the trigger.
Why that settles the sauna question
If fat leaves mainly through your lungs, then the amount of sweat you produce tells you almost nothing about how much fat you lost.
A sauna increases sweat output dramatically and increases carbon dioxide output only slightly, because the metabolic demand of sitting still in heat is modest. The exact figure for how many calories a sauna actually burns is small, and calories burned is the number that governs fat oxidation.
Technically, a fraction of the water produced when fat is oxidized could leave through sweat. That fraction is tiny, it would happen with or without the sauna, and it is not what is making the scale move.

Most people typing this question are not curious about biochemistry. They have been going to a sauna, the scale moved, and they want to know if it counts.
The short answer is that it counts as information about your hydration and nothing else. If that is disappointing, it is worth reframing what you are looking for. Fat loss shows up over weeks on a consistent morning weigh-in, in how clothes fit, and in progress photos taken a month apart. It does not show up in the hour after a sauna, and no method makes it show up that fast.
The upside of knowing this is that you stop chasing a number that was never going to move, and you stop being discouraged when it bounces back the next day. It was always water.
Does a sauna make you look leaner
Sometimes, briefly, and this is a real effect rather than a myth.
Some of the fluid a sauna removes comes from the subcutaneous layer just under the skin. Less fluid there means the skin sits closer to the muscle underneath, so definition looks sharper. Physique competitors have used heat and controlled dehydration for this before stage appearances for decades.
Two things about that. It is entirely temporary, reversing within hours of normal drinking. And competitors do it under supervision on a single planned day, not as a routine.
If you have noticed you look better after a sauna, you are not imagining it. You are just seeing a water effect, not a fat effect.
How much water, and how fast it returns
Most people lose somewhere between 0.5 and 1.0 kilograms of fluid per hour in a traditional sauna, which is roughly one to two pounds. Larger bodies and hotter rooms push toward the upper end.
That fluid comes back as soon as you rehydrate, which for a normal session means within a few hours. If you weigh yourself right after a session, you are measuring how much you sweated. If you weigh yourself the next morning after drinking normally, you are measuring your actual weight.
There is a practical rule here. Weigh yourself at the same time of day, ideally first thing in the morning, and never immediately after heat exposure. Otherwise the sauna will hand you a number and then take it back, which makes tracking anything impossible.

Dehydration also blunts the thing people usually want the sauna for. Blood volume drops as you sweat, and a smaller blood volume makes the heart work harder to move the same oxygen around. Where heat and fat metabolism actually intersect
There is some early research suggesting heat exposure influences how the body handles fats and glucose, through heat shock proteins and changes in insulin sensitivity. It is preliminary work, much of it in animals, and it is a long way from a clinical recommendation.
It is also worth saying plainly that this is not fat burning. It is a possible metabolic effect that researchers are still describing, and anyone selling a sauna on the strength of it is ahead of the evidence.

Body wraps, sweat belts, and heated abdominal creams all target the same misconception, and none of them can move fat through the skin because there is no route for fat to travel that way.

Sauna heat removes water. Fat leaves the body through the lungs as carbon dioxide, at a rate governed by energy demand rather than by how hot the room is.
The pound you lose in a session is fluid, and you will drink it back the same day. That is not a failure of the sauna, it is just the wrong thing to measure it by.
