Sauna Temperature Guide by Sauna Type

Three things determine what you actually experience: the type of sauna, the humidity, and how high off the floor you are sitting. Get those three straight and the number on the wall starts making sense.

Temperature by sauna type

A traditional Finnish sauna runs between 70 and 100 degrees Celsius, which is 158 to 212 Fahrenheit. Most operators settle somewhere in the eighties Celsius, or the high 170s to 180s Fahrenheit. Humidity stays low, usually 5 to 20 percent, unless water is being ladled onto the rocks.

A wood-fired sauna sits in the same range as an electric one. The heat source changes the character of the session more than the temperature, which is covered in the comparison of wood-fired and electric heating.

An infrared sauna runs much cooler, typically 45 to 65 degrees Celsius, or 113 to 149 Fahrenheit. The mechanism is different: infrared warms your body directly rather than heating the air, so a lower air temperature can still produce a heavy sweat. The differences between infrared and traditional heat go well beyond the number.

A steam room is cooler again, around 40 to 45 degrees Celsius, at close to 100 percent humidity. It feels hotter than the reading suggests because saturated air stops your sweat from evaporating. The full sauna and steam room comparison covers why.

A German-style bio or soft sauna sits in between, roughly 50 to 60 degrees with 30 to 50 percent humidity. It is the gentler format, designed for longer sessions.

A quick reference

Why the bench matters more than the dial

This is the part most temperature guides leave out, and it changes the number by more than any other factor.

Hot air rises. In a properly built sauna, the air near the ceiling is dramatically hotter than the air near the floor, and the gap can be thirty degrees Celsius or more between the top bench and the bottom one. The room does not have one temperature. It has a gradient.

That means the thermometer reading depends entirely on where the thermometer is mounted, and your experience depends entirely on which bench you choose. Sitting on the top bench in an eighty-degree sauna is a different session from sitting on the bottom bench in the same room, and no dial captures that.

The practical use of this is control. If a session feels too intense, move down a bench before you consider leaving. If it feels too mild, move up. That single adjustment gives you more range than turning the heater up or down, and it takes effect immediately rather than in twenty minutes.

It also explains the arguments. When two people disagree about a sauna being too hot, they are usually sitting at different heights.

The Rule of 200, and what is wrong with how it is told

You will see this rule quoted on almost every sauna site. Add the air temperature in Fahrenheit to the relative humidity percentage, and aim for a total around 200.

So 180 degrees at 20 percent humidity equals 200. So does 160 degrees at 40 percent. So does 150 at 50. Each of those is a different session, but they land in a similar band of intensity, which is the useful part of the idea.

Here is the part that usually gets attached to it and should not. The rule is regularly described as ancient Finnish wisdom. It is not. Finland uses Celsius, so a Finnish version of the same idea would be a rule of about 100, not 200. There is no Finnish Sauna Society publication that codifies it. The rule appears to be a North American teaching device, built for people who think in Fahrenheit.

That does not make it useless. It is a reasonable rule of thumb and it captures something real, which is that temperature and humidity together determine intensity rather than temperature alone. Just do not treat it as a validated safety threshold, because it was never tested as one.

Where the thermometer should be

Since the room has a gradient, placement decides what the reading means.

A sauna thermometer belongs at head height when seated on the upper bench, which usually puts it somewhere around 20 to 30 centimeters below the ceiling, and away from direct exposure to the heater. Mounted low, it will read far cooler than the air you are actually breathing. Mounted directly above the stove, it will read hotter than anywhere anyone is sitting.

How hot is too hot

There is a real answer to this, and it comes from an event that no longer exists.

The World Sauna Championships ran annually in Heinola, Finland from 1999 to 2010. Competitors sat in a sauna held at 110 degrees Celsius, or 230 Fahrenheit, while organizers poured half a liter of water onto the stove every 30 seconds. The winner was whoever could still leave under their own power.

In August 2010, six minutes into the men’s final, both finalists collapsed with severe burns. Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy, a Russian competitor in his sixties, died that evening. Timo Kaukonen, the defending Finnish champion, was hospitalized. The organizers announced the event would never be held again. The Finnish Sauna Society had opposed it throughout.

Six minutes. Two experienced participants who had passed medical screening. That is what 110 degrees with continuous steam does, and it is the clearest available marker of where the ceiling is.

For ordinary use, most guidance puts the upper limit for healthy adults around 90 degrees Celsius, and there is no benefit established for going beyond it. Anyone with a heart condition, blood pressure issue, or who is pregnant should read who should avoid the sauna before setting any temperature at all.

What to set it to

If you are starting out, somewhere around 70 to 80 degrees Celsius on the lower bench is a sensible place to begin. You can move up a bench or raise the heater once you know how your body responds.

Regular users tend to settle in the eighties, which is where most Finnish public saunas run. That range produces the heart rate and core temperature response the research was conducted at, without the margin for error narrowing the way it does higher up.

Below about 65 degrees in a traditional sauna, you are getting warmth and relaxation but the physiological response starts to fall away. Infrared is the exception, since it works by a different mechanism and produces its effect at lower air temperatures.

Session length interacts with all of this, and the guidance on how long to stay in a sauna is worth reading alongside this page rather than after it. Higher temperature is not a substitute for time, and a shorter session at extreme heat is not equivalent to a longer one at a sensible temperature. The same goes for how often you should be doing this, which matters more than any single setting.

One more thing about calories, since it comes up alongside temperature. Turning the heat up does raise energy expenditure slightly, but not enough to matter. Adding water changes everything

Ladling water onto the rocks produces loyly, the burst of steam that Finnish sauna culture is built around. It does not raise the air temperature much. It raises humidity sharply, which raises perceived heat sharply.

So the thermometer will barely move while the room becomes far more intense. This is the single most common way people get caught out, and it is worth knowing before your first ladle rather than after it.

Add water in small amounts, one ladle at a time, and wait for the effect before adding more. If you are new to the room, let someone else do it first.

The bottom line

A traditional sauna runs 70 to 100 degrees Celsius, infrared 45 to 65, and a steam room around 40 to 45. Those are the numbers.

The bench you choose can change your experience by thirty degrees, humidity changes it further, and the thermometer only tells you about the spot it is mounted in.
