Can You Wear AirPods in a Sauna?

No, and this is one of the rare cases where the manufacturer has settled it in writing. Apple support documentation on sweat and water resistance says directly that you should not wear AirPods in a sauna or steam room.

That is unusually blunt for a manufacturer, and it is worth understanding why they bothered to name saunas specifically.

The temperature line is the obvious problem. A traditional room sits at roughly double the top of the operating range and above the storage limit as well, so the case in your hand is no safer than the earbuds in your ears. Our temperature guide by sauna type has the figures for each format.

IPX4 is not a humidity rating

Recent AirPods carry an IPX4 rating, and people reasonably read that as protection against a sauna. It is not.

IPX4 means resistance to splashing water from any direction. It is a test involving liquid water thrown at a device at ordinary temperature. Hot vapour is a different problem: it is a gas, it moves into gaps that liquid water bridges across, and it condenses into liquid once it reaches a cooler surface inside the housing. A rating for splashes says nothing useful about it.

Apple also notes that the water seals are affected by soaps, lotions, sunscreen and similar, which is a reminder that the resistance is a set of physical seals rather than a permanent property. Seals degrade, and heat is one of the things that degrades them. If yours have been switching off, that is the point

One of the pages ranking on this search is an Apple support forum thread from owners whose AirPods Pro kept powering down in the sauna. It reads as a fault report. It is the opposite.

Thermal protection cuts power when internal temperature passes a safe threshold, and that shutdown is the device preventing damage to its own battery. Every person who reports that theirs work fine in the sauna is describing a device that has been quietly intervening for them, or one that has not hit the threshold yet.

It also explains why the advice you find in forums splits so cleanly. Somebody using a mild infrared cabin at 130 degrees may never trigger the cutoff and will report no trouble. Somebody in a traditional room at 190 will trigger it repeatedly. Both are describing the same device behaving correctly at different temperatures, and neither is describing a device that is undamaged.

The wider point is that a lithium battery does not need to fail to be harmed. Heat exposure produces permanent, cumulative capacity loss, and in an earbud that matters more than in a phone because the battery is tiny to begin with. A twenty percent capacity loss on a phone is annoying. On an AirPod it is the difference between lasting a commute and not.

Your ear canal is wetter than the room

This is the part no competitor mentions, and it is the reason AirPods are a worse case than most electronics in a sauna.

An AirPod sits sealed into the ear canal. In a hot room that canal is warm, enclosed and sweating, and the seal traps that moisture against the mesh, the driver and the pressure-equalisation vent. So the earbud is not experiencing the ambient humidity of the room. It is sitting in a small sealed pocket at close to one hundred percent humidity, in contact with sweat, which is salty and corrosive in a way that plain water is not.

Then you take them out, and Apple guidance is to wipe them and let them dry completely for at least two hours before putting them back in the case. Nobody does that. They go straight into a sealed plastic box with a battery in it, and the moisture stays there.

What to do instead

Leave them in the locker with everything else. If the sauna is yours or you have booked it privately, a small bluetooth speaker outside the room with the sound carrying in works better than earbuds anyway, because it does not seal your ears and you can still hear the stove and anyone talking to you. Shared rooms are a different matter, and the usual courtesies generally rule out audio that other people can hear. Owning the room removes that constraint, which is one line in the ledger of gym membership against your own unit.

It is also worth asking what the audio is for. If the answer is to make the time pass, the time passing slowly is the mechanism, not the problem. Most of what a sauna does for your head depends on there being nothing to attend to, and a session is shorter than most people expect once you stop trying to fill it.
